About SHIATSU

What is Shiatsu?

Literally Shiatsu means “finger pressure” (Shi: finger, atsu: pressure), but there is much more behind this word. Shiatsu is a Japanese holistic perception therapy, spread in Japan between the V – X century. Today Shiatsu is fully incorporated into the Japanese Health Care System and in Switzerland as a complementary therapy.

How does Shiatsu therapy works?

This holistic therapy is still used to promote the self healing energy to freely circulate in the meridians with questioning, precisely applied pressure techniques, manipulation of energetic points (tsubos), joints movements, stretches, breathing, visualization and specific exercises matching the client’s needs. The Energetic Channels, the so-called Meridians, will be free from stagnation and blocks. This activates and supports the innate body self healing energy.

Thanks to this experience the client will be more connected with his body and his emotions. During the treatment the client’s self-awareness will be sensitized to physical sensations, allowing him/ her to recognize certain actions or situations, which are not welcomed by his/ her body and cause an inner imbalance.

Shiatsu’s Possible Applications

What causes imbalance?

Imbalance is the body’s response to internal, external, or combined factors.
Internal factors may include:
– repressed anger or sudden outbursts of anger
– withheld joy or dissipated charisma
– overflowing compassion or excessive narcissism
– suppressed sadness or exemplary perfectionism
– persistent fear or a constant strategic attitude

External factors on the physical level include wind, heat, humidity, dryness, and cold.
On the emotional and mental levels, there are various other influencing factors.

Who can benefit from Shiatsu?

Below is a short list of issues Massimo has worked with since 2014:
– Tensions, stress, headaches, neck pain, back or lumbar pain
– Chronic pain; sleep or eating disorders; addictions
– Conditions before, during, and after pregnancy
– Preparing for surgery, recovering from surgery or trauma
– Lack of concentration (e.g., before exams)

Shiatsu Before, During, and After Pregnancy

My work during pregnancy honors the connection between body and mind, between muscles and bones, sound and resonance, the new life and the parents, breath and movement.
During a Shiatsu session for pregnancy, I focus on the woman’s natural ability to give birth and support each client in aligning with this miracle.

Depending on the needs of the client or couple, I may work on:
– Supporting the connection between the baby and the mother
– Demonstrating practical exercises to prepare for welcoming new life
– Teaching goal-oriented exercises to regain strength in the phase between contractions
– Supporting the role of the partner — during pregnancy, at birth, and afterward — including assistance in the postnatal recovery process

Shiatsu-Therapist for Pregnancy (Jun 2016).
Diploma and training by Well Mother.

How Does a Session Evolve?

Through a conversation about the current condition and clinical history, the client and therapist work together to identify the causes of imbalance and define both short- and long-term goals.
These goals are reviewed and adjusted throughout the course of treatment, according to the client’s evolving needs.

Next, the client is invited to lie down in comfortable clothing on a futon.
During the session, they have the opportunity to feel their life energy — whether through deep relaxation, a sense of lightness, or the experience of energy flowing — as well as the natural movements of the body that help restore balance and harmony.

At the end of the session, the client is given time to integrate the experience into their body and to carry it with them into everyday life.

A Shiatsu treatment lasts between 40 and 90 minutes (or sometimes longer).
